Airway, Oxygen and Ventilation Skills Flashcards
What 3 steps must be taken when inserting an “oropharyngeal airway” ?
1st- Take or verbalize body substance isolation precautions
2nd- Select the appropriately sized airway
3rd- Insert the airway without pushing the tongue posteriorly
The patient is gagging and becoming conscious. What is the next step that should be taken?
Remove the oropharyngeal airway
When “suctioning” a patient’s airway, what are the 4 appropriate steps that should be taken?
1st- Turn on and prepare the suction device
2nd- Assure the presence of mechanical suction. (make sure that it is working)
3rd- Insert the suction tip without suction
4th- Apply suction to the oropharynx/nasopharynx
What 4 steps must be taken when inserting a “nasopharyngeal airway” ?
1st- Select the appropriately sized airway
2nd- Measure the airway
3rd- Verbalize lubrication of the nasal airway
4th- Fully insert the airway with the bevel facing toward the septum
What 11 steps must be taken when administering oxygen or using a “non-breather mask” ?
1st- Take or verbalize appropriate body substance isolation precautions
2nd- Gather appropriate equipment
3rd- Crack the valve on the oxygen tank
4th- Assembles the regulator on the oxygen tank
5th- Opens the oxygen tank valve
6th- Checks the oxygen tank pressure
7th- Check for leaks
8th- Attach the non-breather mask to correct port of regulator
9th- Turn on oxygen flow to prefill the reservoir bag
10th- Adjust regulator to a flow of at least 10L/minute
Final- Attach the mask to patient’s face and adjust it to fit snugly
