Buffering Flashcards
what is buffering?
when we use external things to change how we feel emotionally
why do we buffer?
we don’t want to face the truth of our lives because we don’t want to experience any negative emotions - we feel entitled to feel happiness and pleasure all the time
what is concentrated pleasure?
pleasure in heavy doses - experiencing pleasure just makes us want to experience more pleasure
is life better or worse without false pleasures?
better
when you give up false pleasures, you’re more available to experience _________
real pleasures
how does buffering cause pain?
it only provides temporary release from negative emotion which always comes back harder than it started
there’s always an equal opposite consequence that keeps it from being worth it, even though we tell ourselves it is
what happens when you take away buffers?
you may feel sad, but you get to know yourself in a deeper way and you find the underlying cause of your unhappiness so you can change it
what are natural pleasures?
the kinds we’re meant to experience in our lives
when are we at our ultimate happiness?
when we’re able to be the best versions of ourselves and contribute to the world
when you trade false pleasures in your life for well being, what do you gain?
confidence - you keep gaining more confidence and you can give more and offer more to the world; you can show up and fail and not have to pad yourself with buffers
to be authentic and have a true relationship with life, you have to be willing to experience what?
negative emotion 50% of the time
when we stop buffering, we will experience temporary _____
pain - we need to unbuffer long enough to find the cause of the pain
