Select a community-based program and arrange to make a site visit to conduct an assessment of its cultural competency using the cultural competence assessment that the team chooses (you may use the same assessment chosen in week 3 if it is appropriate for an agency or you may choose another assessment). The team should choose a national agency which has locations or branches in each team member’s local area. You may also choose to assess an agency online if all information is available on their website but this must still be a national agency or organization.
Write a minimum 5-page (does not include title page or reference page) paper that reports your method, findings, and evaluation of the overall competency of the agency. It should also include recommendations for areas of improvement of the agency’s cultural competency based on the weaknesses identified by the assessment used to evaluate this organization. In addition to this also include the following information:
- A brief history of the site (agency)
- The population served
- The services offered
- A mission statement
- Demographics
- Staff and client makeup
- Annual budget
- Source of budget
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation (10-12 slides) with speaker notes.

Case Study
Esmeralda Trujillo, 35, has lived in your community for six months with her four children, ages 4, 6, 10, and 15. The family is living with relatives in a small house on the outskirts of the city, and they cannot stay there much longer. In Guatemala, Esmeralda lived with her husband, had a garden that virtually fed the family, and spent part of her time weaving and sewing garments to sell at the local market. Her husband left to look for work “up north” and she has not heard from him for five months. Esmeralda has a chronic cough and a skin rash. She speaks very little English. She has found occasional work cleaning houses, but it has not been enough to support her and the children. She has come to your agency asking for help and you are her case worker. Your job is to help her obtain the services she needs.
Answer each of the following questions in numbered separate paragraphs corresponding to the question.
1) . What do you need to find out about Esmeralda and her family in order to create the most comprehensive treatment plan? Consider all important areas that effect Esmeralda and her children’s overall wellbeing based on the information given in the case study. Be specific and identify and list what areas need to be included in Esmeralda’s treatment plan.How will you find out this information?
2) . What are the psychological, medical, and social issues both she and her children may be facing? Be specific.
3) . What do you need to know about her cultural values/beliefs that may effect the delivery of social services? Why is it important to know this information as her case worker? How will you obtain that information?
4) . How do you approach her in a culturally sensitive way based on what you know about her cultural beliefs and values? What pitfalls must you avoid in order to be the most culturally competent service provider?
5) . Knowing what you know so far, what services might be helpful for Esmeralda and her children based on the needs you have identified in Question 1? What are the names of specific agencies or resources that you might refer her to in order to meet her most important needs?

View or read the book or film, keeping an eye on the cultural issues or problems portrayed in the work.
Write a minimum 5-page paper that proposes a plan for delivering culturally competent services to one of the characters (who is a member of a minority group studied in this course) appearing in the book or film that the team selects.
Develop specific culturally competent strategies to address those issues for the identified character. As this character’s assigned human service worker, what plan would you develop for them if, for example, they suffer from acculturation issues and face alienation from his or her family or if they are depressed, anxious, have substance abuse issues, anger management issues or have other mental health or social problems? Consider all of the issues present that this character is faced with and create a comprehensive culturally sensitive treatment plan. Include detail of how the services you are recommending are culturally competent.
Explore the richness of cultural diversity in the setting of the film or book, as well as, the benefits and drawbacks of the character(s) culture as they experience it. For example, what are the benefits or drawbacks of a character being from a poor or rich family, being raised in a foreign country or in America, living in the city or living in an urban area, etc.
