Brunstromm Stroke Recovery Terminology/Concepts Flashcards
Describe Principle of Homolateral Synkenesis
Response of uneffected extremetiy will cross over/elicit same response in affected extremity
Aka Raimestes Phenomenon
Resisted ABD/ADD of unaffected limb provokes same response on affected limb
What affects might be witnessed bodily during yawn, cough, sneeze
Yawn will provoke flexor synergy
Cough/Sneeze may induce mm contractions for minutes after
Instictive Grasp Reaction (what infant equivalent?)
Stationary stim in palm provokes grasp
Infant reflex = Palmar grasp (fades @ 5-6 mo)
What area of brain is associated with instictive avoidance reaction?
Parietal lobe
IAR = hand extends and DF when sh elevated and flexed (Get away sign)
Which synergy pattern appears first?
Flexor before extensor
What stage does spasticity reach peak? What also begins at this stage?
3 (2 begins, 1 is flaccid/absent, there is no 0)
VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT
Movement outside of synergy patterns begins at what stage? What also begins?
4
Spasticity BEGINS to decrease
Individual joint movement begins at what stage? What also occurs?
Stage 6
Spasticity is no longer present + Coordination approaches normalcy
What is final stage?
7 - normal motor fx restored
What can you use to develop tone in order to prepare for voluntary mnovement?
- Associated Reactions (uninvolved limbs are moved forcibly)
- Proprioceptive facilitation (PNF)
- Reflexes
______ Promotes a spread of impulses to produce a patterned response
Resistance (proprioception)
movement commands to pts in PNF
Passive
Isometric
Eccentric
Concentric
Passive (let me move you)
Resisted Isometric (don’t let me move you)
Eccentric (let me win)
Concetric (dont let me win)
Facilitation is reduced or dropped as patient shows ____ _____
Voluntary control
