What are features of mastitis?
Severe pain, tender breast
Treat if unwell or not improving despite pumping
Treat with oral flucloxacillin 10-14 days
What is Raynauds disease of the nipple?
Intermittent pain present during and after feeding
Nipple may blanche followed by cyanosis or erythema
Pain resolves when nipple returns to normal colour
Treat conservatively
= heat packs
- avoid cold exposure
- avoid caffeine/smoking
- nifedipine can be used in specialist cases
What drugs contraindicate breastfeeding?
ABX- ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, sulphonamides
Lithium
Benzos
Aspirin
Carbimazole
Methotrexate
Sulfonlyureas
Cytotoxic drugs
Amiodarone
How can we stop lactation?
Stop suckling/expressing
Well supported bra
Can use cabergoline
