Brain tumours Flashcards
What is an acoustic neuroma?
Schwannoma arisen from vestibular branch of CN VIII
What is the presentation of an acoustic neuroma?
Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss
Tinnitus
Vertigo
Loss of corneal reflex
What investigation if done for acoustic neuroma?
MRI
What is the management of acoustic neuroma?
Slow growing= watchful waiting
Surgery and radiotherapy
What is he presentation of pituitary adenoma?
Hyperpituitarism- unexpected bone growth and lactation
Bitemporal hemianopia- only if tumour >10mm
Headache
Increased ICP
What investigations are done for pituitary adenoma?
Bloods- U&Es, hormones
CT/MRI
What is the management of a pituitary adenoma?
Transphenoidal surgery
What is the prognosis for meningioma?
usually benign and slow growing but can be malignant
Generally good prognosis
What are the risk factors for meningioma?
Neurofibromatosis type 2- 50% chance
Radiation
What is the presentation of meningioma?
Dependent on size and location
Small= asymptomatic
Weakness, increased ICP, seizures…
What investigations are done for meningioma?
CT/MRI
What is the management of meningioma?
Watchful waiting
Surgical resection
What is the most aggressive brain cancer?
Glioblastoma multiforme GBM
What is the presentation of GBM?
Dependent on size and location
Early- headaches, N&V, personality and memory change
Rapid decline, fast growing
What is the management of GBM?
Incurable
Symptomatic- dexamethasone, anticonvulsants, anti-emetics
Palliative- surgery, radio, chemo
