What is a concussion?
Head injury that temporarily affects brain functioning
What is the presentation of a concussion?
Post traumatic amnesia= hallmark Headache Dizziness, lack of coordination and balance N&V Confusion, disorientation Visual- photophobia, blurred vision
How is concussion diagnosed?
Clinically
Red flags= CT
How are concussions managed?
Full physical and cognitive rest
Graded return to activity
What are some complications of concussion?
Post concussion syndrome
Second impact syndrome
Chronic traumatic encepahlopathy
What is post concussion syndrome?
Symptoms have delay in resolving and may become permanent
What is second impact syndrome?
RApid brain swelling caused by 2nd head injury becore 1st has healed
WHo is second impact syndrome most often seen in?
Children and adolescents
What does second impact syndrome cause?
Swelling –> increased ICP –> herniation
High morbidity and mortality`
What is chronic traumatic encephalopathy?
Cognitive and physical handicaps due to multiple concussions and head injuries
What are the late features of chronic traumatic encephalopathy?
Dementia
