- Etiologic agent of whooping cough
- Only infects and causes disease in humans
- Does not survive well outside the host

Highly communicable stage,
mucous membrane
inflammation and mild coughing
with runny nose
Catarrhal Stage
Associated with vomiting and
“whooping” or hurried, deep
respiration, last for six weeks.
Severe coughing for 15 to 25 X
in 24 hrs
Paroxysmal Stage
▪ Symptoms slowly decline, last
six months after infection.
Convalescent Stage
Regan-Lowe agar, Bordet-Gengou
potato infusion agar, Modified Jones-Kendrick
charcoal agar and Casamino acid broth
CULTURE in Bordatella
