Bonding Flashcards
What are valence electrons
They occupy the space in the atom furthest from the nucleus
Why do atoms bond with eachother
To gain more stability
Atoms have to be sufficiently close enough to form a bond
How do electrons arrange themselves in an atom
They arrange themselves in a way so that they have the lowest possible amount of energy to increase stability
What does inert mean
Chemically unreactive as the atom has a full valence shell
Inert elements have no role in biological systems
What happens when chemical bonds form between atoms
Electrons not atoms* (first sentence)
When does ionic and covalent bonding occurand what is this determined by
How does electronegativity determine polarity
High difference in electronegativity = highly polar band
Non polar bond = elections shared truly equally between atoms → have a dipole moment of zero
