Body Systems - CURRENT Flashcards
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
Works w/ skeletal system to move bones
Moves respiratory diaphragm (lungs)
3 Different Muscles of Muscular System
Skeletal
Cardiac (heart)
Smooth (organs)
INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
Defense against virus/bacteria
Works w/ nervous to provide sense of touch
Regulates body temperature
Integumentary System Organs
Skin (largest organ)
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Works w/ circulatory to provide O2 and remove CO2 waste
Diaphragm
up moves air out, down moves air in
Respiratory System Organs
Lungs
Trachea (wind pipe)
Diaphragm
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Enzymes in saliva break down food
Intestines absorb water + nutrients
Works w/ Circulatory to put nutrients into blood
Digestive System Organs
Small + large intestine
Stomach
Esophagus
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Transmits signals via nerves
Most control over homeostasis
Works with/in charge of all other systems
Nervous System organs
Brain
Spinal Cord
Nerves
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Red blood cells carry things to the rest of the body
Helps Lymphatic system fight diseases
Circulatory system organs
Heart
Arteries
Veins
Red blood cells
LYMPHATIC (LYMPH) SYSTEM
Prevents/fights infections
Works w/ Circulatory to destroy viruses + bacteria
AKA – Immune System
Lymph system organs
Tonsil
Lymph Nodes
Spleen
SKELETAL SYSTEM
Protects organs
Works w/ Muscular to move and give shape
Makes red blood cells for Circulatory
Skeletal System organs
Bones
Marrow
Cartilage
URINARY/EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Removes waste/toxins/dead cells from Circulatory
Maintains homeostasis of pH (acids)
Urinary/Excretory system organs
Kidneys
Bladder
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Produces hormones - chemicals that send messages
Works w/ nervous to affect mood, growth, development, etc
Endocrine system organs
Pituitary Gland
Hypothalamus
Testis + ovary
What is Feedback?
Your body systems work together to ensure that homeostasis is maintained, even when your body is “off balance”.
This is done through a system of feedback loops present in your body.
Positive Feedback
Less common
Respond to change by amplifying that change.
Used to push processes to completion.
Ex. Childbirth
Negative Feedback
Respond to change by opposing that change.
Used to bring the body back to its “normal” state.
Ex. High Body Temperature
