Body Planes
Imaginary, geometric planes that divide the body into sections
Median plane
Divides the body from left to right (medial to lateral). Also called the midline.
Sagittal plane
Parallel to median plane but divides the median & lateral. Also called the paramedian.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body in half from front to back. Also called the frontal.
Dorsal plane
Divides the body in half from top to bottom. Also called horizontal or the coronal
Axis plane
Divides the leg in half from left to right
Medial
Toward the median plane or center
Lateral
Away from the median plane or center
Cranial
Closer to or towards the head
Caudel
Closer to or towards the tail
Dorsal
Towards the back or top line
Ventral
Towards the belly or midline
Proximal
On a limb, means toward the body
Distal
On a limb means toward the foot
Dorsal (below the knee or hock)
The front of the forelimb or hindlimb
Palmer
The back of the forelimb below the knee
Planter
The back of the forelimb below the hock
Axial
Closer to axis plane on the leg
Abaxial
Further away from the axis plane on the leg
Rostral
Toward the nose on the head (Toward the ears is still cranial)
Near side
Left side of the horse
Off side
The right side of the horse
