it collects sea water from prop shaft, packing glands and fresh water from the wash basin.

Locations - the float switches are one amidships in the forward area of the steering room, the SECOND is located in the engine room bilge between frames 7 and 8 near the keel.
Engineers test the float switches weekly. HOWEVER daily check the position of the federal selector know which should be positioned to the “radio” position and the main batter switch is in the “off” position. Otherwise the alarm will be disabled.

OIL : check oil level daily - oil filters are replaced upon oil change and yearly regardless of oil change or not at that time.

Run Away turbo - manual mechanical governor control moving the handle toward teh throttle air actuator will shut off fuel flow. Do this by pressing button 22a and turning handle 22b 1/4 turn.

The discharge valve is an OS&Y valve used to close off piping so repairs to check valve or pump will not affect use of fire mains. This gets greased @ 3 month intervals.
Sea chest vent valve is used to bleed air from the system otherwise its to remain in closed position.
The heat exchanger zinc is inspected at 6 month intervals and replace zinc if 50% disintegrated.
BT4 Main fire Pump - 2 x De Laval 2 stage centrifugal pump rated @ 3000gpm @ 150psi direct driven from a Caterpillar 3412 Diesel engine.
Lubricate pump bearing once a month with 1 shot of grease.
Change grease every 12 months. Clean it out and refill housing by hand 1/4 to 1/3 full of new grease. Testing housing temp by hand on housing - dont let temp rise about 180 degrees - if this happens check for overgreasing.
These pumps are of bronze construction. Pump suction inlet is 10”, outlet 8” and pump impellers are 15 1/4”.
Maintenance of main fire pumps STARTS WITH KEEPING EXTERNAL SURFACES CLEAN AT ALL TIMES.
Shaft packing - if packing gland is leaking tighten shaft packing only when pump is in operation, this adjusts for slight dripping.
