BLS Resucitation Flashcards
In the primary assessment (ABCs), what does A stand for and what are we looking for? How do we treat it?
Airway | airway obstruction = suction, coaching cough, abdominal J-thrusts
In the primary assessment (ABCs), what does B stand for and what are we looking for? How do we treat it?
Breathing | respiratory distress/failure = ventilate with O2
In the primary assessment (ABCs), what does C stand for and what are we looking for? How do we treat it?
Circulation | cardiac arrest/severe bleeding = CPR or stop bleed
For an infant, what would be the compression-ventilation ratio be for CPR if you were by yourself?
30:2
For an infant, what would be the compression-ventilation ratio be for CPR if you had a partner?
15:2
At about how long after losing consciousness should CPR begin? At how long if delayed does signs of brain damage begin to show?
ASAP | 6 min
At about how long would irreversible brain damage occur if no CPR is being initiated?
10 mins
What is the indication for CPR?
ANYONE who is pulseless and apneic (not breathing)
How long should you check the pulse and chest rise/fall for prior to beginning CPR?
no more than 5-10 seconds
What is the rate/min of compressions for an adult?
100-120 compressions/min
During compressions, what must you do?
allow for full chest recoil = allows heart to fill with blood
Can an AED shock someone who has a pulse? Why or why not?
will only shock a patient who needs it
What does the P wave correspond to in the heart cycle?
atrial contraction
What do the QRS complex represent?
ventricular contraction
What is normal sinus rhythm?
normal cardiac rhythm that originates in the SA node
What is ventricular fibrillation?
lethal dysrhythmia from many parts of the ventricles = causes ventricular shaking/quivering
What is ventricular tachycardia?
organized rhythm from ventricles but no pulse
What is ventricular tachycardia due to?
cardiogenic shock
What is asystole?
flatline = no pulse/cardiac output
What is PEA?
Pulseless Electrical Activity | electrical conductivity is working BUT ventricles is not pumping/contracting = no pulse
What is the window of time that defibrillation works best when patient goes into VTach or VFib?
0-2 mins
What is the purpose of defibrilation?
jump start the electrical activity of the heart
On an adult, where should you place pads?
right sternal border and other one = between L 5th- 6th intercostal space
What must you do if a patient is wearing a medication patch prior to applying pads?
remove patches
Where do you place pads if patient has a pacemaker?
1in away from device
For chest compressions, where do you compress on the chest?
lower half of sternum
What is the common cause of cardiac arrest in children?
respiratory distress
What is the indication to do CPR on infants?
pulsess/apneic OR pulse under 60/poor skin signs
How do you position a patient who has ROSC?
recovery position on L side
When do you do abdominal J-thrusts?
patient is ALERT but no airway movement
When do you begin CPR on a choking patient?
when they become unresponsive
How would you perform “J-thrusts” on obese individuals and pregnant women?
chest thrusts downward
How would one perform CPR on a pregnant woman?
left uterine displacement
