Blood Vessels Lab Flashcards
Is the circulatory system an open system or a closed system?
Closed system
All blood vessels are composed of 3 layers of tissues except for:
Capillaries
3 Layers Tissues are:
- Tunica interna
- Tunica media
- Tunica externa
Inner layer that lines the lumen of a blood vessel; it is one cell thick of endothelium; simple squamous underlain with basal lamina, (may also have extra layer of elastic connective tissue in arteries)
Tunica Interna
Middle layer, which is composed of smooth muscle and elastin fibers
Tunica Media
Outermost layer, composed of areolar and fibrous connective tissue. Its main function is for support or protection
Tunica Externa
Higher pressure, lumen are smaller, thickest tunica media; Usually deep (next to bone): usually named after bone, region, or organ:
Arteries
Lower pressure, largest lumen, tunica media thinner
Veins
Low pressure; smallest lumen; no smooth muscle; wall only one cell thick (endothelium and basement membrane)
Capillaries
Is a communication between two vessels; It offers more than one route for blood to reach an organ or drain a region
Anastomosis
Umbilical Arteries turn into the:
Medial Umbilical Ligaments
The Umbilical Vein turns into the:
Ligamentum Teres
The Ductus Venosus turns into the:
Ligamentum Venosum
The Ductus Arteriosus turns into the:
Ligamentum Arteriosum
The Foramen Ovale turns into the:
Fossa Ovalis
