Blood Types Flashcards
1
Q
Rh Factor
A
- second protein marker (antigen) that affects identification of blood
- inherited from parents
- Rh+ = people with Rh proteins in blood
- Rh- = people w/o Rh proteins in blood (may have anti-Rh antibodies)
2
Q
Rh Factor: Anti Rh Antibodies
A
• anti-Rh antibodies are not always present
• anti Rh antibodies are only present after first exposure to Rh+ blood
• Rh- recipient can recieve Rh+ once
- but this will stimulate production of anti-Rh antibodies
• 2nd transfusion of Rh+ will cause agglutination in Rh- patient (can cause death)
3
Q
Blood Type Compatibility
A
- blood transfusion: receiving blood into one’s body
- identifying blood type is crucial for blood transfusions
- mismatched blood types cause agglutination (clumping of blood)
- agglutination leads to clogged blood vessels, blocked circulation, damage to body, and possibly death
