Q

Rh Factor: Anti Rh Antibodies

A

• anti-Rh antibodies are not always present
• anti Rh antibodies are only present after first exposure to Rh+ blood
• Rh- recipient can recieve Rh+ once
- but this will stimulate production of anti-Rh antibodies
• 2nd transfusion of Rh+ will cause agglutination in Rh- patient (can cause death)

Q

Blood Type Compatibility

A
  • blood transfusion: receiving blood into one’s body
  • identifying blood type is crucial for blood transfusions
  • mismatched blood types cause agglutination (clumping of blood)
  • agglutination leads to clogged blood vessels, blocked circulation, damage to body, and possibly death
