Q

Absorption

A

Occurs in different ways:

  1. Simple diffusion
  2. Facilitated diffusion
  3. Active transport

Q

Absorption: Facilitated Diffusion

A
  • no energy needed
  • carrier needed
  • carries the nutrients into the cells
  • (water soluble vitamins)

Q

Absorption in the Small Intestines

A
  • inside the intestines, the walls are folded (ridged)
  • projected from these ridged “hills” are villi
  • projecting from the villi are microvilli
  • the circulatory system (capillaries) run directly beneath the outer cell wall of the villi
  • nutrients absorbed from the intestines into the capillaries of the villi

A
  • no energy or carriers needed
  • just passes through the cell walls
  • water and small lipids

Q

Absorption: Active Transport

A
  • energy needed
  • carrier needed
  • energy “fuels” the carrier
  • glucose, amino acids
