Absorption Flashcards
1
Q
Absorption
A
Occurs in different ways:
- Simple diffusion
- Facilitated diffusion
- Active transport
2
Q
Absorption: Facilitated Diffusion
A
- no energy needed
- carrier needed
- carries the nutrients into the cells
- (water soluble vitamins)
3
Q
Absorption in the Small Intestines
A
- inside the intestines, the walls are folded (ridged)
- projected from these ridged “hills” are villi
- projecting from the villi are microvilli
- the circulatory system (capillaries) run directly beneath the outer cell wall of the villi
- nutrients absorbed from the intestines into the capillaries of the villi
4
Q
Absorption: Simple Diffusion
A
- no energy or carriers needed
- just passes through the cell walls
- water and small lipids
5
Q
Absorption: Active Transport
A
- energy needed
- carrier needed
- energy “fuels” the carrier
- glucose, amino acids
6
Q
Final Stage: Elimination
A
- stools
- what is not absorbed, or not needed anymore
- eliminated
