Blood and Circulatory System Flashcards
Two types of circulation systems
Open
Closed
Open circulation system
Heart pumps blood into vessels that are open ended eg insects
Closed circulation system
Blood system is in a continuous system of blood vessels eg humans
Advantages of a closed circulation system
Blood can be pumped faster (cells are more active)
Blood flow rate can change for different organs (increased to leg muscles when running)
Arteries carry blood
Away from the heart
Veins carry blood
Towards the heart
High pressure in what blood vessels
Arteries
Low pressure in what blood vessels
Veins
Structure of arteries
Thick elastic wall
Narrow lumen
Structure of veins
Thin wall
Wide lumen
Arteriales function
Connects arteries and capillaries
Venues function
Connect capillaries to the veins
Capillaries functions
Link arterioles and venules
Role of muscle in blood vessels
Expand to allow increased blood flow through the vessel
Role of elastic fibres in vessels
Bring the blood vessels back to shape when they’ve been expanded by muscle
Location of the heart
Between the lungs, slightly to the left side of the thorax, above the diaphragm
Function of the heart
To pump blood around the body
Type of muscle in the heart
Cardiac muscle
Never tires
What is a systemic circuit
Pumps to the head, trunk And limbs and back to the Heart
Pulmonary circuit
Pumps to the lungs and back to the heart
Advantages of a double circulation system
Separation of oxygen rich and oxygen poor blood
Blood pressure can be kept high
Portal systems
A blood pathways that begins and ends in capillaries
Hepatic portal system
Connects the stomach and intestines with the liver
3 valve types
Tricuspid valve (right) Bicuspid valve (left) Semi lunar valves
Tricuspid valve function
Prevents backflow into fight atrium
Semi lunar valve function
Prevents backflow into heart
Bicuspid valve function
Prevents backflow into the left atrium
How is blood supplied to the heart wall
Coronary arteries
Where are coronary arteries
Aorta just above the semi lunar valves in the aorta
Where are coronary veins
Right atrium8
