Out of the Civl rights movement
What was different?
Same concept , way they were conducting protest
Why did it exist?
Why they fighting for different things than the CRM?
They tried to fight for that they believed in, in a different way
What happened to MLK non-violence approach?
Started losing momentum in the 60s - assassinated + laws were just passed - nothing happened
What did not change?
People still lived in poverty
Inadequate public transport
33% black families below poverty line
Discrepancy between white + black health care
What was a successful form of protest?
Use of force - advance goals faster than current projections
Why didn’t Martin Luther King want to use violence?
He didn’t want to create a stigma
What did the BPM think about the stigma?
Wanted to use stigma as leverage to gain new rights
What was the BPM not trying to gain?
Political change
What makes the CRM and BPM different?
BPM did not want political change - not same way
What did the CRM fight for?
Political change - laws to be passed to removed discrimination and segregation
What was the BPM fighting for?
To get attention that would improve living conditions of African American people
What did they focus mainly on?
Installation of black pride
Who was the leader of the BPM?
Malcolm X - islamic leader + influential

Malcolm X
Who was the BPP?
Black Panther Party
What was the BPP?
Social military organisation
Who and when was the BPP created?
Huey Newton in 1966
What did the BPP fight against?
Particular social issues that exist for black people
How was the BPP identified?
Wore black berets and leather jackets. Carried weapons
What were the weapons?
Shotguns, guerilla organisation
What was their focus?
Not to commit violence, on protection and communities
What did the BPP patrol?
Streets in the south and all over USA. If tension escalated, they would step in - gun fight
What did the BBP set up?
Three clinics - African doctors donated supplies and time - help health care
Tutoring scheme - adults who could not read/write
Hunger programmes
What was the 10 point program?
Aimed at negotiating for liberties with the government
What were their tactics?
Go to government and ask for ten things since they are helping out
What was the first thing on their list?
The government must release every African American in prison must be released - no matter crime
What did the first item on the list allow?
Made government susceptible to honouring the other nine points
When was an outbreak of violence?
Between 1965 and 1969
Where was the main areas of violence?
Two industrial areas:
1. Watts
2. Detroits
What was Watts and Detroits?
Two of the biggest industrial areas in America - predominantly black (cheap labour)
What did Johnson create?
commission to investigate violence
What did Johnson do when he got his results?
Acted on the findings - starts to implement systems to improve lives
What was a major long term gain?
Afro culture, jazz, rappers - promotes African pride
Why was the BPP always going to be seen as negative?
Use of violence
Why was the BPP seen as positive?
cultural icon for their passion for their community

- Clinic
- Tutoring schemes
- Feeding Schemes
- Police brutality reduction
What was the BPM failures?
- Violence creates stigma
- Police brutality did not stop
- Only superficial changes
- Underlying discrimination remained

Creation of black spirit
