BL - Haematopoiesis Flashcards
What is an erythrocyte more commonly known as?
Red blood cell
Why don’t red blood cells have a nucleus or organelles?
To maximise space for carriage of gases.
Which cells are known as the “first line killers” of the body’s immune system?
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes.
How do neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes destroy pathogens?
They smell the organism’s “chemotaxis” then move, engulf and kill using the contents of their granules.
What is the role of platelets?
They looks for small breaks in blood vessels and form a “primary plug” of platelets to stop the bleeding. They form a surface for clotting factors to make the definitive clot.
How much of total blood is made up of plasma?
55%, and erythrocytes make up 45%
What is the main role of B cells?
Produce antibodies once faced with foreign antigen.
What is the main role of T cells?
Recognise foreign proteins and activate other cells, can also inhibit immune response
What is the main role of natural killer cells?
Stimulating sick cells to self destruct in apoptosis
