Bitches be Crazy Flashcards
What is a parasitic infection caused by the introduction of the protozoan organisms into the blood by the bite of a female anopheles mosquito
Malaria
What is plasmodium?
Malaria Parasite
What mosquito causes malaria?
Female Anopheles
What gets injected when bitten?
Sporozoites
Where do the sporozoites go?
Parenchymal cells of liver to become schizonts
What is the initial development in the liver?
Pre-ertyhrocytic cycle
What is further development in the liver after RBC invasion?
Exoeruthrocytic cycle
What do schizonts feed on?
Hgb
What is the pigment of Hgb when fed on?
Malarial pigment
What is the malarial pigment made up of?
Hematin and protein
What causes elevated temperatures in the body?
Increased levels of schizonts
What causes the ring forms?
Schizonts
What is developed when things ruptured?
Merozoites
At some point a gametocyte is produced which is then ingested by a mosquito, what happens then?
Beginning of sexual reproduction – production of zygote
Where can all stages of asexual cycle be demonstrated?
peripheral blood except P. Falciparum
What happens when only rings and gametocytes?
RBC membrane becomes sticky as parasite matures
2 Cells adhere to endothelial lining of capillaries of internal organs 3 Interferes with normal blood flow.
What happens when ring form of P. Falciparum - light blue circular structures with red chromatin dot.?
- Double chromatin dots
- multiple ring froms
- marginal or applique
- RBC- usually normal
What do ring form of P. Falciparum look like?
- light blue circular structures with red chromatin dot
What do you see for gametocute of p. falciparum?
- curved sausage/ banana shaped with central large chromatin dot covered with centralized mass of hemazoin.
- shorter and wider than female with rounded ends, diffused chromatin seen with hemazoin granules.
- RBC may be attached to gametocyte.
Is Gametocyte of P. falciparum considered diagnostic?
Yes
It is observed that the fever cycle corresponds to the Erythrocytic Schizogony cycle for each of the malaria species
True
What are the 4 types of malaria?
- Plasmodium Falciparum (malignant)
- Plasmodium Vivax ( Benign)
- Plasmodium Ovale (benign)
- Plasmodium Malariae (benign quartan)
What is the most fatal type?
Plasmodium Falciparum, with fever every 48 hours
What is the most common type?
Plasmodium Vivax
What’s the only type that has a fever every 72 hours?
Plasmodium Malariae
What does Plasmodium Falciparum do to the RBCs?
Intravascular hemolysis (destruction of RBCs)
What methods are used for blood collection?
Capillary or Venous
What tube is used for venous
EDTA (Purple)
How long will blood sample be stored?
2C to 30C for 3 days
