Biopsychology: L10-13 Flashcards
1
Q
Biological rhythms
A
Distinct patterns of changes in body activity that follow cyclical time periods
2
Q
Circadian rhythms
A
Once every 24 hours
Driven by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) in the hypothalamus
- Pacemaker must be reset so that bodies are in synchrony with the rest of the world
- Natural light provides input, setting the body clock to the correct time -> photoentrainment
3
Q
Sleep-wake cycle
A
- Under homeostatic control
- Strongest sleep drive at 2-4 AM and 1-3PM
- The internal circadian clock is free running (relies on itself)
4
Q
Michel Siffre
A
- Spent time living underground and woke, ate and slept when he felt like it
- Had roughly a 25 hour circadian rhythm
- Supports the idea of a free running circadian rhythm
5
Q
Core body temperature
A
- At its lowest (36
