Biology 6.3.1. Flashcards
Climax Community
The most complex community than an ecosystem can support, which is in a stable state and shows very little change over time.
Consumer
organisms which obtain their energy by feeding on other organisms.
Decomposition
the break down of dead matter.
Denitrification
the conversion of nitrate ions into nitrogen gas.
Nitrification
conversion of ammonia –> nitrite –> nitrate.
Nitrogen fixation
conversion of atmospheric nitrogen –> ammonia.
Primary succession
succession that begins on bare ground, by pioneer species, in a series of seral stages that progress to a climax community.
Producer
an organism that converts light energy into chemical energy by photosynthesis.
Trophic level
the position or stage that an organism occupies in a food chain.
Sere
A stage during the process of ecological succession.
