Biology 4.2.2. Flashcards
Adaptions
characteristics which increase an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction in an environment.
Classification
placing living organisms into taxonomic groups based on similar features.
Convergent evolution
unrelated species that show similar traits, which have evolved separately, but under similar evolutionary pressures.
Hierarchy
When organisms are classified into large groups which are then subdivided into increasingly smaller groups.
Phylogeny
the evolutionary relationships between organisms.
Speciation
the evolution of a new species.
Taxonomy
The system of classifying organisms according to their observable features or genetic characteristics.
Variation
differences between species.
Natural selection
the theory proposed by Darwin on the evolution of species.
Continuous variation
differences between individuals that cover a range of values rather than discrete categories.
Binomial nomenclature
a system of naming organisms that uses two scientific names for species.
