Biology 2.1.6. Flashcards
Crossing over
the exchange of segments of chromatids by breaking and rejoining.
Differentiation
when an unspecialised cell becomes specialised to perform a particular function.
Homologous chromosomes
one maternal and one paternal chromosome that have the same loci of alleles and are a similar size and length.
Organ
a collection of tissues which work together to perform a specialised function.
Stem cell
an undifferentiated cell, that is capable of mitosis and differentiating to perform a specialised function.
Tissue
a collection of cells which work together to perform a specialised function.
Prophase 1 of meiosis
pairing up of homologous chromosomes, forming bivalents where recombination and chiasmata form from crossing-over.
Prophase 2 of meiosis
Chromosomes still consist of 2 chromatids, that condense and become visible again.
