Biology 4.2.1. Flashcards
Abiotic factor
Non-living component of a habitat.
Abundance
The frequency of occurrence of a species in a particular area.
Biodiversity
The variety of living organisms present in a range of habitats in an area.
Endangered species
A species that is in danger of extinction because the population has reached a critical level.
Genetic diversity
The variation/ difference of alleles that make up a species.
Habitat
The area in which an organism lives.
Non-random sampling
some element of bias affects the likelihood of an individual’s selection.
Random sampling
A sample produced without bias; each individual has an equal likelihood of selection.
Sample
a representative group of organisms that are selected from a population.
Sampling
Collecting a number of representative organisms.
Species evenness
a measure of the relative numbers of individuals in each species living in a habitat.
Species richness
the number of different species living in a particular area.
Systematic sampling
A sampling technique where different areas within a habitat are identified and sampled separately; for example, by using a line transect.
Ex situ
the type of conservation of which seed banks are an example.
