Biochemistry- Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Fatty acids. There are 2 types. Saturated and unsaturated.
What is a saturated fatty acid?
Carbon atoms are holding all of the hydrogen that is possible with no double bonds.
Plug up blood vessels.
What is this H H H H H O | | | | | // H- C-C- C- C -C-C | | | | | \ H H H H H OH
A saturated fatty acid.
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
Does not contain as many hydrogen as possible
Double bonds occur which allows movement so a liquid at room temperature. Ex. Olive oil
What is this H H H H H O | | | | | // H- C-C- C=C -C-C | | | \ H H H OH
Unsaturated fatty acid. Has a double bond.
What is poly unsaturated fatty acid?
- Many double bonds
- Partially hydrogenated fats (saturated)
- trans fatty acids
- synthetic
- turns to gel in our blood vessels
What is a neutral fat?
Composed of glycerol and 3 fatty acids. Joined through DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS.
What is this? H O | | | H - C - OH ..... HO - C - R | | | H - C - OH ..... HO - C - R | | | H - C - OH ..... HO - C - R | H
That is a neutral fat.
What is a phospholipid?
- fatty acid containing phosphorous
- makes up cell membranes
What is this?
O
| <- non polar tail- hydrophobic
A phospholipid.
What is many phospholipids stacked on top of each other?
A phospholipid bilayer.
