Biochemistry-Carbohydrates. Flashcards
What is a monosaccharide?
Single sugar.
What is this? O H H H H H || | | | | | H-C-C-C-C-C-C-H | | | | | | H H H H H H
Chain of a monosaccharide. C6H12O6
What are some characteristics of a monosaccharide chain?
C6H12O6
- > glucose
- > hexose
- > powder form
What are some characteristics of monosaccharide rings?
- ribose
- galactose
- fructose
- glucose
- liquid form
What is this? H | H -C-OH | H C---------O H \ / \ \ / C H C / \ H H / OH C --------C / \ OH O H
Monosaccharide ring form
What is an isomer?
Same formula but different arrangement.
What is a disaccharide?
Double sugar.
What is the reaction that creates a disaccharide from two monosaccharide?
Dehydration synthesis.
Water is released and a bond is formed between two monosaccharides through the oxygen.
- Glucose+ glucose=?
- Glucose+Fructose=?
- Glucose+Galactose=?
- Maltose(beer)
- Sucrose
- Lactose (milk)
What is a polysaccharide?
Many sugars joined together.
What are three polysaccharides?
Cellulose (plants)
glycogen (liver)
starch/amylose (plant)
What is a monomer?
Links of polymers.
ex. Glucose
What is a polymer?
Chain of a polysaccharide. Joined by monomers.
ex. Cellulose
What is the reaction that creates simple sugars from complex sugars?
Hydrolysis. Opposite of dehydration synthesis. Water is used to break a disaccharide into glucose.
