Bio Lab Quiz Prep: Enzymes Flashcards
Reactant (substrate)
a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Binds to a enzyme and produces a product.
Enzyme
Proteins that accelerate chemical reactions in the body. The substrate binds to the enzyme.
Biocatalyst
substances that speed up the rate at which biochemical reactions occur
Benzoquinone
Chemical compound used as a fungicide, as a reagent in photography, and to make dyes and other chemicals.
Catechol
(potato extract) Chemical used as a reagent for photography, dyeing fur, rubber and plastic production and in the pharmaceutical industry
Oxidase
an enzyme which promotes the transfer of a hydrogen atom from a particular substrate to an oxygen molecule, forming water or hydrogen peroxide.
Product
Is the molecule that is produced after the substrate and enzyme do their thing.
inhibitor
molecules that interact with enzymes (temporary or permanent) in some way and reduce the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction or prevent enzymes to work in a normal manner.
denature
The unfolding, or breaking up of a protein.
Optimal conditions
about 98.6°F (37°C). As temperature increases, enzyme reactions increase. But if the temperature gets too high, the enzyme stops working.
Catalyst
Substance that speeds up chemical reaction.
Enzyme substrate complex
a temporary molecule formed when an enzyme comes into perfect contact with its substrate.
Catalase
Is an enzyme that maintains an optimal level of the molecule in the cell.
Hydrogen Peroxide
used as a bleach for textiles and paper, as a component of rocket fuels, and for producing foam rubber and organic
Activator
Increase a velocity of enzymatic reaction.
