Billing Rates Flashcards
Every user in a Clio account has a user-specific billing rate. When they enter billable time in Clio, this is the rate that will be assigned to that Time Entry unless otherwise specified.
Matters, Clients, and Activity Categories can also be assigned billing rates. The answer lies in Clio’s Rate Hierarchy! Let’s review each Billing rate type, starting from the bottom of the hierarchy and working our way up
User Default Rate-Hourly
User default rates are connected to each Clio user profile. Default rates are used when the user adds a Time Entry and there is not custom Matter, Contact, or Activity Category rate. If a custom Matter, Client, or Activity Category rate has been added, the user default rate will be trumped
Hourly Activity Category
Hourly Activity Category rates are assigned to specific Activity Categories as a custom rate and will override a user default rate. However, if a custom Matter or Client rate has been specified, that rate will override the Hourly Activity Category rate
Custom Client Rate-Hourly
Custom Client rates are assigned directly to Contacts upon creation or when editing their information. This rate will override a user default rate or an hourly Activity Category rate. If a custom Matter rate has been specified, it will override the custom Client rate
Custom Matter Rate
Custom Matter rates are assigned when creating or editing a Matter and will override user default rates, hourly Activity Category rates, and custom Client rates. The only thing that can override a custom Matter rate is an Activity Category with a custom flat rate
Flat Rate Activity Category
Flat Rate Activity Categories are at the top of Clio’s billing rate hierarchy. They will override user default rates, hourly Activity Category rates, Custom Client rates, and Custom Matter rates
