Biliary tree Flashcards
What drains bile from the liver?
Right hepatic duct from right lobe of liver
Left hepatic duct from left lobe of liver
Where do the right and left hepatic ducts travel?
Leave the liver via the porta hepatitis
What do the right and left hepatic ducts do after leaving the liver?
Join together to form the common hepatic duct
What does the common hepatic duct do?
Descends downwards
What happens to the common hepatic duct while it descends downwards from the liver?
It is joined by the cystic duct from the gall bladder
What do the common hepatic duct and cystic duct form by joining together?
Common bile duct
Where does the common bile duct travel?
Descends downwards
posteriorly to the superior part of the duodenum
posteriorly to head of pancreas
What happens to the common bile duct as it descends downwards?
On the left side of the descending part of the duodenum
it is joined by the pancreatic duct
What do the common bile duct and pancreatic duct form by joining together?
Ampulla of vater
Where does the ampulla of vater travel?
Into the descending part of the duodenum
the major duodenal papilla
What controls the passage of bile into the duodenum?
Sphincter of the common bile duct
What is the sphincter of the bile duct made up of?
Thickening of circular smooth muscle at end of common bile duct
How does the sphincter of the common bile duct control the passage of bile into the duodenum?
Contracts
to narrow the common bile duct
to reduce passage of bile into ampulla of vater
and hence into duodenum
What does the common hepatic duct travel with?
Hepatic vein
