-bind with receptors in brain
-well absorbed with oral
-admin oral or parentally
Indications
-sedation
-sleep induction
-skeletal muscle relaxation
-anxiety relief**
-anxiety r/t depression
-acute seizure
-alcohol withdrawal
-agitation
-balanced anesthesia**
-mod or conscious sedation
Contraindications
-used with opioid analgesics, analgesic dose decrease then gradual increase
-older adult: resp depress, over sedate, dizzy, confuse, hypotension, impaired mobility
-hepatic/renal impairment: increased risk of AE—resp depress
Nursing implications
-physical dependence with longer use/increase dose
-monitor for sx of withdrawal or recurrent of og sx
-never stop abruptly
-therapeutic and AE occur after 2-3 days

-excessive sedation
