Indications
-Analgesic: minor pain
-antipyretic
-identical to ASA but no anti-inflammatory
Contraindications
-impaired hepatic function**
-impaired renal function
-pregnancy/lactation
Adverse effects
-hepatoxicity: fatal liver necrosis w/ overdose**
-renal failure
-hypersensitivity reactions
Nursing implications
-dont exceed recommended dose (3000mg in 24 hrs)
-careful w/ combo meds containing Tylenol
-call HCP if fever and rash
-hepatoxic @ therapeutic dose with alcohol, smoking, anti-seizure meds
Manifestations of early toxicity
-anorexia
-N/V
-sweating
Manifestations of late toxicity
-jaundice
-vomit
-CNS stim
-vascular collapse
-coma
-death
What to do if suspected of toxicity
Get serum levels within 4 hrs of ingestion
Treatment for toxicity
-within 4 hrs gastric lavage and activated charcoal
-antidote: Acetylcystine, give within 8 hrs
