Benign Skin Neoplasms Flashcards
A 42 y.o. male presents with a new mole that is sometimes itchy and bled once. What is the most likely diagnosis?
Seborrheic keratosis
What are seborrheic keratoses?
Benign superficial growths that can arise on all body surfaces except palms and soles
What is the appearance of seborrheic keratoses?
Superficial raised epidermal growths, stuck-on quality, sometimes have fissures or cracks on the surface, color is tan/brown/black
What are these lesions?
Seborrheic keratosis
The image on the left is normal skin, what is the image on the right?
Seborrheic keratosis
What are these lesions on the patient’s back?
Seborrheic keratoses
What are these spots on the patient’s dorsal hands?
Solar lentigo (sun spots)
Do solar lentigines suggest cancer likelihood?
They are not precancerous, but they can reflect extensive solar history which is a cancer risk
What is the appearance of solar lentigo?
Flat light brown macules (lighter than typical nevi) that are common on sun damaged skin on sun exposed areas
What is this?
Solar lentigo
What is this?
Solar lentigo
What are the histological features of solar lentigo?
Pigmented rete ridges, solar elastosis, increased melanin without increased melanocytes
What are the key differences between solar lentigo and melanoma?
Melanoma is darker, there are usually multiple, and the color is variable. Melanoma is also usually larger and evolving
What are these?
Acrochordons (skin tags)
What is the appearance of skin tags?
Soft fleshy papules that arise in axillae, neck, groin, eyelids. They can be skin colored or hyperpigmented. They are often attached to skin with a small stalk.
What is this?
Acrochordons (skin tags)
What is this slightly raised firm pink papule?
Dermatofibroma
What is the appearance of dermatofibromas?
Single small round firm papules (0.5-1 cm), pink/reddish brown/sometimes hyperpigmented
What is the dimple sign?
A puckering of pink papule when pinched that suggests dermatofibroma
What is this?
Keloid
What is the appearance of keloids?
Firm, hyperpigmented, pink or red plaque or nodule, often shiny or smooth surface
What usually triggers a keloid?
They usually occur at the site of previous known tissue trauma (cut, piercing, burn, acne, etc)
What is this?
Keloid
thick collagen nodules containing high density unidirectional collagen fibrils and fibroblasts
What causes keloid formation?
Imbalance of too much collagen production, too little degradation
What is this?
Cherry angioma
What are these?
Cherry angiomas
What is the appearance of cherry angiomas?
Shiny bright red papules
What is this?
Cherry angioma - raised bump with dilated capillaries
What is the appearance of cherry angioma on histology?
Raised bump with dilated capillaries
What is this lesion that bleeds with minimal trauma?
Pyogenic granuloma
What is the appearance of pyogenic granulomas?
Eruptive, small solitary, sessile or pedunculated vascular (red), raised papules
bleeds easily with trauma, relative quick onset
What are these?
Pyogenic granuloma
What is this?
Pyogenic granuloma
skin protrusion with dermis and dilated capillaries
What is this nodule that bursts with white foul-smelling materials?
Epidermal inclusion cyst (EIC)
What is the presentation of an epidermal inclusion cyst?
A mobile subcutaneous nodule, often with overlying punctum
What is the cause of epidermal inclusion cysts?
They arise from dilated hair follicles that fill with debris and collects a sac of foul-smelling cheesy white material
What is this?
Epidermal inclusion cyst
What is this?
Lipoma
What is the appearance of a lipoma?
Soft, ill-defined, rubbery, painless, subcutaneous nodule
What are these bumps that do not resolve with acne cream?
Sebaceous hyperplasia
What is the appearance of sebaceous hyperplasia?
Cream colored or yellowish papule with central depression, usually located on face and multiple in number
What is this?
Sebaceous hyperplasia
What is this?
Sebaceous hyperplasia
What is this?
Hemangioma
What is the most common benign tumor of childhood?
Hemangioma
