What does Belbin believe about his team roles?
Diversity = strength
Too many people competing in same role - friction & unproductive behaviour.
If lacking in roles - team will struggle / not be effective.
All have a role we fit more naturally. Can do other roles (secondary roles) but prefer not to.
If assigned to a role that matches preference, will perform to a higher standard & be more motivated.
According to Belbin there are two types of roles
- Functional roles - those you have to perform as part of your job
Manager = coordinator role
Risk manager = specialist role - Team or natural roles - these reflect our natural preferences & inate abilities, regardless of requirements of the job.
