Behaviourist perspective Flashcards
Principles of the behaviourist perspective
All people are born tabula rosa (blank slates) and all behaviours are learned from the environment.
Concepts of the behaviourist perspective
-Classical conditioning
-Operant conditioning
-Social learning Theory
Classical conditioning
Learning by association
Operant conditioning
Learning from the consequences of our behaviour
Positive reinforcement
Behaviour is encouraged through rewards
Negative reinforcement
Behaviour is encouraged by removing an unpleasant stimulus
Positive punishment
Discouraging the behaviour by adding a negative consequence
Negative punishment
Discouraging behaviour by removing something desirable
Social learning theory
Learning through observation and imitation
Strengths of behaviourist perspective
-Scientific-controlled research
-Useful-can be applied to education/aversion therapy/child development
Weaknesses of the behavioural perspective
-Could be considered unethical when researching
-Doesn’t consider all influences on behaviour (such as natural characteristics)
