Participants
People that take part in psychological research
Sample
Group of participants used in any given research
Generalisable
Applicable to the general public (diverse)
Sampling method
How the participants are found
Opportunity sampling
When we obtain participants who are easy to find at the time of the research
Self selecting sampling
When participants volunteer to take part in response to an email/poster/letter you have posted. Some researchers even pay their participants.
Laboratory experiments
Experiments that take place in a controlled (laboratory) setting.
Controls
Features that are kept the same for all participants
Independent variable
The aspect we manipulate or change between conditions/groups
Dependent variable
The factor being measured as a result of the IV
Quantitative Data
Data represented by numbers (e.g score out of 100)
Qualitative Data
Data represented by words (e.g quotes)
Confederate
Someone who behaves as instructed by the researcher
