Behavioral methods Flashcards
Approach used primarily to describe, classify or diagnose whereas behavioral assessment are more directly related to the fomulation of a specific treatment program
Traditional approach
Behavioral assessment
-targeted behavior must be quantifiable (the number of..)
Timeline Followback Methodology (TLFB)
record frequency and intensity of target behavior
Behavior rating scale
Observer notes the presence or intensity of targeted behaviors usually by checking boxes or filling in coded terms
Broad-band instruments
measure a wide variety of behaviors
Narrow-band instruments
focus on behaviors related to single, specific constructs
Process of identifying the DV and IV with respect to the presenting problem
Functional analysis of behavior
Procedure that allows for observation and evaluation of an individual under a set of circumstances
Situational performance measures
*Leaderless group technique -observe each individual how they function in a group
Cognitive behavioral assessment
- In contrast to traditional approach, which ascertain the possible underlying causes of disordered behaviors, it focuses on the behaviors, thoughts and physiological responses that define a disordered condition are considered the real problem
- focus on a direct change in overt behavior, thoughts or physiological responses
Among the most important pioneers in the field of cognitive behavioral assessment. Also proposed what they call a functional approach assessment
Kanfer and Saslow
Functional approach assessment
Assumption of the learning approach that both normal and disordered behaviors develop according to the same laws and differ only in extremes
Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS)
-cognitive behavioral assessment that focuses primarily on thinking patter rather than overt behavior (Beck)
Cognitive Functional analysis
What people say to themselves also influences behavior
Issues in Behavioral Assessment
- Generalizability theory -more appropriate for behavioral approach because behavior changes across situations
- CTT -more appropriate for personality traits because relatively stable across situations
How to combat contrast effect (inter-rater)?
- Rigorous training of raters
- Composite judgment: averaging of multiple judgments
