Basic meteorology Flashcards
The sun
Is the root cause of all weather
Uneven heating
The earths surface is heated unevenly this is due to the rotation of the Earth, land and oceans, and the seasons.
Rising air
Rising Air at the equator, decreases the air pressure, creating an area of low pressure
High to low
Areas of high pressure always flow towards areas of low pressure
Deflection
When does not always flow directly to the law, due to the rotation of the Earth, and terrain
Wind
Moves cold air into warm here, and warm air and cold air
Fronts
Interacting areas of warm and cold air are called fronts
Saturation
Air can only absorb a certain amount of water vapor. The amount of water vapour that air can hold, depends on the air temperature.
(when air is holding 100% of the water vapor, it can hold at the current temperature, it is said to be saturated)
Clouds and precipitation
When the air is cool, down to the dewpoint, water vapour is condensed out of the air in the form of clouds and precipitation
Mountain clouds
Lenticular clouds
Rotor clouds
Cap clouds
Banner, clouds
