Basic Human Anatomy Flashcards
Muscular System
System that works together to produce force, allow movement, produce heat. Hardly ever work alone. 656 total.
Skeletal System
System that holds the rest of the body up and in place. 206 total. Protects vital organs, stores minerals and fats, produces red and white blood cells.
Circulatory System
The system that transports blood to the body. Carries oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body.
Respiratory System
System that deals with breathing. Take in through the trachea and goes to the bronchi eventually reaching the lungs.
Nervous System
The brain is the center of this sytem. Most complex and delicate of all the systems. Divided into the CNS (sends and receives messages to the body) and PNS (attaches the CNS to the body’s organs and extremities).
Digestive System
This system transports food to be broken down and then sends that energy to the rest of the body via the circulatory system.
Immune System
This system fights off pathogens that are harmful to the balance of the body. Line of defense against harmful pathogens and can be found anywhere on the body. Consists of lymph nodes, the thymus, spleen, tonsils and adenoids.
Digestive Process
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, small intestine, liver, large intestine, rectum and anus.
Endocrine System
This is the information signal system. Made up of glands that use hormones as information channels. Regulates things such as sleep, mood, and metabolism.
Parts of the endocrine system
Pituitary gland (master gland of the system), thyroid gland (regulates metabolism), and adrenal gland (responds to stress), pineal gland (produces melatonin), pancreas (regulates blood sugar)
Integumentary System
System that protects the body; consists of fat, skin, hair and nails
Urinary System
System that supports elimination of waste
Origin
Where the muscle joins the stainonary bone at the end
Tendons
Connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Cartilage
Tough but flexible connective tissue that covers the end of a bone
