Basic Anatomy Terminology Flashcards
Human Gross Anatomy
Refers to macroscopic anatomy. Study of structure and organization.
Anatomical Position
- Globally accepted
- Upright, looking forward, feet flat/parallel
- Arms to side with palms facing anteriorly (forearms supinated)
Coronal Plane
- “Frontal Plane”
- Divides into anterior/posterior parts
Mid-Sagittal Plane
- “Medial Plane”
- Equal left/right halves
Sagittal Plane
- Unequal left/right parts
Transverse Plane
- “Horizontal Plane”
- “Cross Section”
- “Axial Plane”
- Plane that is at right angles to both the sagittal and coronal planes
- Divides into superior and inferior portions
Flexion
Decreasing the angle at a joint (usually an anterior movement)
Extension
Increasing the angle at a joint (usually posterior movement)
Dorsiflexion
Refers to flexion at the ankle joint
Plantarflexion
Refers to extension of the ankle joint
ABduction
Away from midline
ADduction
toward midline
Circumduction
Circular movement involving sequential flexion, aBduction, extension and aDduction
Rotation
turning part of body around longitudinal axis
Medial Rotation
turning anterior surface of limb toward midline of body
Lateral Rotation
turning anterior surface of limb away from midline of the body
Supination
palm anteriorly (forearm movement)
Pronation
palm faced posteriorly (forearm movement)
Inversion
sole toward midline (foot movement)
Eversion
sole away from midline (foot movement)
