baddeley - cognitive classic study Flashcards
currently only has the AO1
1
Q
what was the aim?
A
- to test the effect of semantic and acoustic similarity on the learning and recalling of word sequences in long term memory
- used a control to prevent rehearsal between presentation and testing to minimise STM
1
Q
what were the different conditions used (IV)?
A
- acoustically similar
- acoustically dissimilar
- semantically similar
- semantically dissimilar
2
Q
what was the DV of the study?
A
- score on a recall test of 10 words in the correct order (words were around room)
3
Q
what was the sample used?
A
- 72 men and women from from a university panel
4
Q
how were the words presented and for how long?
A
- viewed a slideshow of a set of 10 words
- each word appeared for 3 seconds
5
Q
what was the interference task used?
A
- involved hearing and then recalling 8 numbers three times
6
Q
what happened after the 4th trial?
A
- 15 minute break and performed an unrelated interference task then asked to recall the list again
- final recall was unexpected
7
Q
what were the results found for acoustically similar words?
A
- confusing at first but then caught up with control group (not statistically significant)
8
Q
what results were found for semantically similar words?
A
- experimental group lags behind the control group
9
Q
what did baddeley conclude from the results?
A
- LTM encodes semantically
- STM encodes acoustically
