Bacterial Infections Flashcards
What bacteria is associated with Pitted Keratolysis?
Kytococcus
What bacteria is associated with Erythrasma?
Corynebacterium
Describe Pitted Keratolysis
- Hyperhydrosis
- Slimy character of pedal skin
- Maloderous**
- Numerous small crater-like pits
What commonly causes Impetigo?
- Staph Aureus
2. Staph Pyogenes
What does Impetigo look like?
Superficial small vesicles, which rupture leading to golden crust formation.
What is the difference between an abscess, furuncle, and carbuncle?
- Abscess–walled off collection of pus
- Furuncle–acute, deep-seated tender nodule-forming abscess that stems from a Staph folliculitis
- Carbuncle–deeper and composed of several interconnecting abscesses involving several contiguous follicles
Types of Cutaneous Tuberculosis
- Primary Inoculation TB
- TB Verrucosa Cutis
- Lupus Vulgaris
- Scrofulderma
What does TB Verrucosa Cutis look like?
Papule on violaceous base –> Verrucous hyperkeratotic plaque
What does Lupus Vulgaris look like?
Flat-topped papule –> well delineated, irregular, red-brown plaque
What does Scrofuloderma look like?
Firm subcutaneous nodule along lateral neck.
What are the atypical mycobacteria?
- M. Marinum
2. M. Ulcerans
Where would you get M. Marinum?
Tropical fish tank (chlorine sensitive)
Where would you get M. Ulcerans?
Contaminated plants in swamps.
What are the stages of Lyme Borreliosis?
Stage 1: Localized Infection–erythema migrans (target lesion)
Stage 2: Disseminated Infection–resemble EM, but smaller
Stage 3: Persistent Infection–erythema (early), cigarette paper skin (late)
