B9 - Respiration 1️⃣✅ Flashcards
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water
What is the chemical sybmbol for glucose?
What is the chemical equation for Anaerobic respiration in muscles?
glucose —-> lactic acid
What is the chemical equation for Anaerobic respiration in plant & yeast cells?
glucose —-> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation
What respiring method requires oxygen?
Aerobic respiration
What respiring method does not require oxygen?
Anaerobic respiration
What is an oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to react with the accumulated lactic acid and remove it from body cells
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
the mitochondira
What type of reaction is respiration?
exothermic
When do we result to respiring anerobically?
When we cant supply enough oxygen to our muscles because our heart & lungs are already at their maximum rate.
Why can you only respire anerobically for a short period of time?
Because anerobic respiration produces lactic acid, a substance that is toxic. Hence the gasp for oxygen to rid it out of our system and turn it back into glucose to be easily expelled through the mouth/ lungs
Where does anerobic respiration take place?
cytoplasm
How is lactic acid broken down?
- the oxygen from the oxygen debt travels from the lungs to the liver
- the lactic acid from the respiring muscles travels in the blood to the liver
- the 02 is then used to fully oxidise the lactic acid (break it down) into glucose
Why does lactic acid build up during anerobic respiration?
Because there is not enough oxygen avainable to fully oxidise glucose
What is metabolism?
The sum of all the reactions in a cell or the body
Why is fermentation of yeast cells so important?
Because the products of fermentation are important in the manufacturing of bread and alcoholic drinks
Give some examples for what the energy generated by respiration is used for throughout the body
- chemical reactions e.g. protein synthesis
- muscle contraction & movement
- keeping warm
Give some examples of what metabolism involves
- the break down & synthesis of carbohydrates from sugars e.g. starch, cellulose
- the break down & synthesis of amino acids from glucose & nitrate ions to form proteins
- the break down & synthesis of lipids from one molocule of glycerol & one molocule of fatty acids
What is the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
( glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water)
What is the balanced symbol equation for anerobic respiration?
( glucose —> lactic acid)
