B8 - Photosynthesis 1️⃣✅ Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction in which energy is transferred from the environment as light from the sun to the leaves of a plant.
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloroplasts of the leaves of a plant
What is the name of the green o pigment in the leaves?
Chlorophyll
Give the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
Give the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the symbol for glucose?
C6H12O6
Define the term limiting factor
Anything that limits the rate of a reaction when its in short supply
What are the 3 limiting factors for photosynthesis?
temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration
Describe how light intensity affects photosynthesis
Increasing light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis until another factor becomes limiting
Describe how temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis
Increasing temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis, although at high temperatures enzymes are denatured so the rate of photosynthesis quickly decreases
Describe how carbon dioxide concentration affects photosynthesis
Increasing carbon dioxide concentration increases the rate of photosynthesis until another factor becomes limiting
Why are limiting factors important when growing plants in a greenhouse?
Greenhouses control limiting factors to get the highest possible rate of photosynthesis so they can grow plants as quickly as possible
How do plants use the glucose produced in photosynthesis?
Mitosis, respiration, produce amino acids for protein synthesis or produce fat/ oil for storage
What is the rate of photosynthesis?
The rate of photosynthesis is the speed carbon dioxide (& water) is being turned into glucose and oxygen
