B8) Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
An endothermic reaction.
What does an endothermic reaction require?
Input of energy from environment.
What can photosynthesis be summarised as?
Carbon Dioxide + water –light–> glucose + oxygen.
What are some examples of leaf adaptations?
Most leaves broad. Most leaves thin. Contain chlorophyll in chloroplasts. Have veins. Have guard cells.
How is having guard cells a useful leaf adaptation?
Open + close the stomata to regulate gas exchange.
How is having chlorophyll in the chloroplasms a useful leaf adaptation?
Absorb light.
How is having thin leaves a useful leaf adaptation?
Shortens diffusion distances.
How is having broad leaves a useful leaf adaptation?
Gives big surface area for light to fall on.
How is having air spaces a useful leaf adaptation?
Allow carbon dioxide to get to the cells + oxygen to leave by diffusion.
How is having veins a useful leaf adaptation?
Bring plenty of water in the xylem to the cells of leaves + remove products of photosynthesis in phloem.
What is glucose?
A simple sugar.
What is known as limiting factors?
Limiting amount of photosynthesis a plant can manage.
For who was the first recorded greenhouse built for?
Tiberius Caesar.
When was the first recorded greenhouse built?
In about AD30.
Who was Tiberius Caesar?
A roman emperor who wanted to eat cucumbers out of season.
