B8 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process of converting simple molecules such as CO2 and H20 into complex organic molecules such as glucose.
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction as it absorbs energy from light. Light energy is converted into chemical energy
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water ——(light&chlorophylls)——> Glucose + Oxygen
What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 ————> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the formula for glucose?
C6H12O6
What organ of the plant does photosynthesis occur?
Leaves
What organelles of a leaf cell does photosynthesis occur?
Chloroplasts
Uses of glucose implants :
1) Respiration to release energy
2) It’s converted into starch for storage (monomer to ploymer)
3) Converted into cellulous to make cell walls
4) Converted into protiens for growth and repair
5) Converted into lipids and stored in seeds
6) Converted into sucrose and transported into the ploem
7) Converted into sucrose to make fruits
What are the rate limiting factors of photosynthesis?
1) Sun Light
2) Carbon Dioxide
3) Temperature
4) Amount of Chlorophyll
Are there more stomata on the top or bottom of the leaf? Why?
Bottom, to reduce the amount of water lost by transpiration.
What is the name of the cells on either sides of the stomata?
Guard cells
Where does photosynthesis take place in the leaf?
Chloroplasts in the Palisade layer.
Why do plants make fruit?
They convert glucose into sucrose in plants so animals eat them and spread their seeds.
How does the light level effect rate of photosynthesis?
More light, more energy for the reaction to happen.
How does the temperature effect the rate of photosynthesis?
Optimum temperature means more kinetic energy for reaction to happen faster, however too high of a temperature results in denaturing.
