What is cancer?
The result of changes in the cells that lead to uncontrolled growth and division.
What are Benign tumours?
Growths of abnormal cells which are contained in one area (usually within a membrane)
they don’t spread to other parts of the body
What is a Malignant tumour?
Cancer cells which invade neighbouring tissues and spread to different parts of the body in the blood (where they form secondary tumors)
What is health?
The state of physical and mental well-being
What is the effect of tar in the body?
It is a carcinogen.
What is a carcinogen?
Chemicals and other agents that cause cancer.
What is the effect of nicotine in the body?
It is a stimulant drug in cigarettes which causes the heart to beat faster.
What is the effect of carbon monoxide in the body?
A poisonous gas which binds to red blood cells instead of oxygen (reducing the amount of oxygen in the blood)
Risk factors of type 2 diabetes
1) high fat/cholestrol levels
2) overweight
3) smoking
4) sedentary lifestyle
5) high-blood pressure
Short-term effects of alcohol
1) feeling good
2) loss of self-control
3) lack of inhibition
4) lack of money
5) slow reaction time
Long term effects of alcohol
- alcohol dependance
- cirrhosis of the liver
- vulnerability to accidents
- weakened immune system
- damage to brain
What is ionising radiation?
Radiation causing damage to the DNA in the cells causing mutations.
What is an individual human cost of non-communicable diseases?
Decreases mental health levels and the living quality of life.
What is an individual financial cost of non-communicable diseases?
Can’t work as much so you earn less
What is a local-community human cost of non-communicable diseases?
Affects the people who live/care with the affected person and can bring anxiety
