B6: Nervous Coordination Flashcards
Nervous System Response Chain
Receptor - Sensory Neurone - Coordinator (CNS) - Motor Neurone - Effector
Reflex Pathway
Bypasses the CNS Stimulus - Receptor - Sensory Neurone - Relay Neurone - Motor Neurone - Effector - Response
Neurones
Basic cells of the nervous system that carry minute electrical IMPULSES (not messages) around the body
Nerves
Bundles of hundreds/thousands of Neurones
CNS
The Central Nervous System is made up of the brain and spinal cord where information is processed.
Sensory Neurones
Neurone which carries impulses from the sensory organs to the CNS
Motor Neurones
Neurone that carries impulses from the CNS to the effector organs.
Relay Neurones
Reflex Actions. Connect the Sensory Neurone to the Motor Nerone. Found in the CNS.
Synapse
A gap between neurones where the transmission of information is chemical not electrical.
How a synapse works
- Impulse arrives in neurone 2. Sacs containing chemicals release them into he gap between the neurones. 3. Chemicals attach themselves to the surface of the next neurone and set up a new electrical impulse.
Cerebral Cortex
Consciousness, Intelligence, memory, language + thought.
Cerebellum
Movement + Balance
Medulla
Unconscious Activity
Hypothalamus
Regulation of body functions
Pituitary Gland
Produces hormones
