B3 - The Breathing System Flashcards
What does the diaphragm do?
It separates the thorax and abdomen.
What are the lungs?
Pink sponges protected by the rib cage.
What is the order that air passes through the breathing system in when you breathe in?
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli.
What happens when you breathe in?
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract.Thorax volumes increases.Pressure decreases and air is drawn in.
What happens when you breathe out?
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax.Thorax volume decreased.Pressure increases and air is forced out.
What is the definition of ventilation?
The movement of air into and out of lungs.
What are the role of ventilators and who can they help?
Help those who can’t breathe to move air in/out of their lungs.People with lung injuries, disease, or someone under anaesthetic.
What is an iron lung?
A giant, old case
How does an iron lung work?
Air is pumped out of the case, the pressure drops, the lungs expand, and air is drawn in.
What is the disadvantage of an iron lung?
It interferes with blood flow.
How does a modern ventilator work?
Air is pumped into the lungs which expands the ribcage. It then stops pumping, the ribcage relaxes, and the air is breathes out.
What is the advantage of modern ventilators?
It doesn’t interfere with blood flow.
What is the disadvantage of modern ventilators?
It can cause damage, such as burst alveoli.
What is another word for the upper body?
Thorax.
