What is artificial blood and give an example?
A substitute (e.g: saline).
What does artificial blood do?
Provides time to produce new cells.
How safe is artificial blood?
Safe unless there are air bubbles.
What does an artificial heart do?
Mechanically pumps the blood.
What is a benefit of temporary artificial hearts?
They keep a patient alive whilst waiting for a donor.
What is a benefit of permanent artificial hearts?
They reduce the donor need.
What are artificial hearts made of and why?
Metal or plastic.
They are not seen as foreign so are accepted by the body.
How could an artificial break?
The electric motor could fail.
What happens if the blood flow isn’t smooth?
It can cause clots which lead to a stroke.
What must patients with an artificial heart take?
Blood thinners.
What happens if you have an accident whilst taking blood thinners?
There will be excessive bleeding.
What do mechanical valves do?
Replace defective valves.
What causes Coronary heart disease?
Arteries blocked by fat deposits.
What can Coronary heart disease lead to?
Narrowed arteries cause a restricted blood flow which leads to a heart attack.
What are stents and what do they do?
They are tubes that open the arteries.
